Record sales over Christmas period

08/01/2001

Electronics Boutique, The UK's largest retailer of computer software and video games announced today record sales for the month of December, with like for like sales growth of 15% and overall sales growth of 17% for the five week period ended 30th December.

The continued strong performance of the Group throughout the year places the company on cumulative like for like growth for the eleven months to 30th December of 7%, and on target to generate sales of over £300 million for the year to 31st January 2001.

The directors are confident that the results for the year will be in line with consensus expectations.

Peter Lewis, Chairman, said:

"The advent of PlayStation 2 is a mouth watering prospect as we look forward to the benefits its recent launch will bring to our company in future years. Even without PlayStation 2 we have still generated positive like for like sales growth this year, a testament to the underlying strength of our business which bodes well for the year ahead."

John Steinbrecher, Chief Executive, said:

"We are pleased with our progress this year. In what has been a very competitive market place we have seen good sales growth combined with healthy gross margins maintained throughout the second half of the year; including the all important Christmas trading period.

Christmas sales have been strong across multiple formats with titles such as THQ's WWF Smackdown 2 and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire from Eidos having sold exceptionally well. With PlayStation 2 now becoming more freely available, it will have a major positive impact on our already strong trading performance."
